Girls on the Run 5K Series Spring Recap

By Carley Fuller on 5/17/2017

Girls on the Run is so much fun! More than 2000 girls, coaches, participants and spectators joined us for the Girls on the Run 5K Series in May. The series kicked off in Lafayette on Saturday, May 6 in Parc Sans Souci. The next afternoon we celebrated the Girls on the Run 5k in Baton Rouge at Pennington Biomedical Research Center.

Participants in Lafayette got an early start on Saturday morning with Inspiration Village activities in the park. After an energetic Funky Fusion warm-up, Adele Hebert with Christian Youth Theater sang the national anthem.

After crossing the finish line participants enjoyed a celebration pancake breakfast with fruit. Thanks to Penn Tompkins and his incredible crew of volunteers for cooking more than 800 pancakes on site!

A special thank you to Junior League of Lafayette for their local support of volunteering and sponsorship. We are grateful for community partners that make the program possible for girls!

On a beautiful Sunday afternoon participants in Baton Rouge set up school tents and enjoyed the sunshine during Inspiration Village activities. Next, Tracy Smith led a fun Zumba warm-up. The crowd was excited to head to the start line thanks to our fantastic emcee, Kathy Victorian with Amerigroup.

Amerigroup Foundation provided 76 local sponsorships this season and committed to 80 sponsorships in the fall! Thank you Amerigroup Foundation for joining us in creating a world where every girl recognizes and activates her limitless potential.

Crowne Plaza of Baton Rouge prepared a delicious jambalaya lunch after the 5k. We are grateful for their continued support of Girls on the Run South Louisiana throughout the years.

More than 500 girls in South Louisiana proudly received a Girls on the Run 5K finishers medal in May. Though this was a physical achievement, we are inspired by the positive mental, emotional and social transformations that occurred throughout the 10-week Girls on the Run program this spring.

The Girls on the Run 5k Series would not be possible without the generous support of community partners. Another special thanks to Blue Cross Blue Shield of Louisiana for making an impact throughout Louisiana. Blue Cross Blue Shield partnered with councils across the state to ensure that girls have the opportunity to participate in the Girls on the Run program.

Thank you to all who participated in the Girls on the Run 5K Series in May. Check our Facebook page for multiple picture albums highlighting the events. We look forward to seeing you in the fall during our program and the next Girls on the Run 5k Series.

Mark your calendars! Baton Rouge – Saturday, November 18, 2017 at 9am. and Lafayette – Sunday, November 19, 2017 at 2pm.
